There are no winners in war...

This morning another casualty was lost in the "war on drugs". However individuals feel about the death penalty (I am strongly opposed), surely no-one cannot feel some sympathy for Nguyen Tuong Van's family & friends as they mourn the loss of their son, brother and friend. They are now also victims of the "war on drugs". As we take time to reflect this morning, perhaps this tragic loss of life can help those in power to start looking a new methods of preventing the harms of drugs on our society. Clearly the current processes aren't working....

The drug market is the purest form of capitalism. Supply and demand set the price. Demand is not flexible (otherwise drug addiction wouldn't be a problem), so curbing the supply only pushes price up, attracting more trafficers. Karl Marx said that very clearly: If the profit is high enough nothing will stop the capitalist from pursuing it. (He was wrong in many statements, but this one is bullseye --- can you say corporate scandal).
So winning that war is only possible by eliminating the profits. Not by trying to curb the supply. So we must take care of the addicts. It is in our own interest. Once they are off the street, streets are much safer...
Ask the people of Switzerland, Manchester and similar places about their experience.
